MRI scan cost in New Zealand

Private radiology pricing, public-pathway eligibility, and what your private health cover pays.

Short answer: Canstar's April 2025 multi-provider survey put NZ private MRI scans at roughly NZ$1,300–$3,500 Source: Canstar (Apr 2025) ↗ — lower end for single-joint scans (knee/shoulder), upper end for larger body regions (abdomen, brain, spine), and contrast injection typically adds about +$1,000. Each provider sets its own price list; ring two in your city for written quotes. Most comprehensive NZ private health policies pay diagnostic imaging up to an annual sublimit, with a specialist referral and any policy excess.

Why MRI cost varies

  • Body part / region scanned — a single-region MRI (e.g., knee) is priced differently from multi-region scans.
  • With or without contrast — contrast agents add to the cost.
  • Provider + city — Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and the regions all have multiple private radiology providers, each with their own price list.
  • Out-of-hours / urgent — same-day or weekend scans may be priced higher.

What private health insurance pays for MRI

  • Diagnostic-imaging sublimit — usually an annual cap covering MRI, CT, ultrasound and similar.
  • Specialist referral — most policies require a specialist (not GP) referral for the scan to be claimable.
  • Excess — applies to the claim if you've chosen an excess option.
  • Pre-existing-condition rules — imaging for known prior conditions may be excluded.

Practical steps

  1. Get a specialist referral specifying the body part + with/without contrast.
  2. Ring two private radiology providers for written quotes.
  3. Pre-approve with your insurer; they'll confirm what's covered.
  4. If self-funding, ask the provider about up-front-payment discounts.
